Outdoor Digital Signage

Outdoor Digital Signage
There are plenty of challenges when applying outside digital signage however despite this more and more electronic screens are being erected outside to take advantage of their higher audience numbers these outdoor digital advertising screens can generate. While the most obvious challenge for carrying a commercial grade LCD screen outdoors is shielding it from the weather, and specifically rainfall, the problems associated with the sun can be just as difficult to overcome. The issue with the sun and outdoor electronic signage is the direct sunlight will often make the screen unreadable. Not only can sun cause warmth (you should know what that is like when you attempt to watch the TV at home during the summertime where very often you are forced to shut the curtain to watch the screen obviously ) but even if there is no warmth in bright sunlight the screen will appear dim and difficult to see. But there are methods to ensure the screen is as easy as possible when taken outdoors:
Brightness
Ensuring you have the brightest type of screen possible will go along way to making sure the screen is readable. The brightness of LCD screens is measured in nits (aka candela per square metre). The minimum screen brightness for any outdoor LCD screen should be 800 nits however LCD with 1000+ nits can be found and must be taken into account when seeking to get into external electronic signage. It should also be mentioned that in general commercial screens have higher nit values and are better suited to outdoor signage screens.
Anti-glare technologies
Preventing glare is done in many of ways. Optical bondng, anti-reflective glass and tinting are just some options. Regrettably, no matter which way you go on that there most likely will be a few drop-off in brightness. Direct sunlight can cause more problems than just glare also. Screen burn can grow whether sunlight is continually on it either the outdoor digital screen should be turned away from sunlight or some other remedy to prevent this screen burn should be considered such as warming the screen itself.
Bespoke Outdoor Content

A great deal of content which works well in indoor places doesn’t respond well to be taken outdoors. Use colors and designs which are more notable in outdoor places. There is often a lot of trial and error involved in this but assess what works and what doesn’t and you should soon develop a flare for designing content that is acceptable for outdoor electronic signage.
